Memory of Harold
...From Tank.
Harold Goldman. H to his mates. I still see that wry smile and hear that very dry sense of humour. I was a mate with H in school and the years after, madly socialising on the first floor of the Monash Library till late at night when all our parents thought what good boys we were studying so late at night. It was quite a scene at Monash. Harold was always listening intently and was quick with a comment. He was very witty and only became passionate when his beloved Collingwood was mentioned. It was hard work for Harold being a Collingwood supporter in the late seventies and early eighties. But H never let the excitement get to him much. He was always seemingly calm and took each Grand final defeat with resignation and was forthcoming with a stream of sarcastic comments that hid the typical Collingwood supporter’s defeatist attitude. We spent many a late afternoon in summer travelling out to V.F.L. Park to watch an evening of World Series Cricket. We would arrive and be screaming like yobbos only for the esky that H and Mory Kalkopf were carrying to break and all the soft drink we were carrying rolling down the stairs. To the laughs of the beer-swilling crowd we quickly cleaned up. We got our own back when at the dinner break H, Ron Sherwin and others would hit a tennis ball into the crowd and watch the yobs dive over many rows of seats for the spectacular catch. Harold was the consummate Jewish sportsman. Competent at most sports but would give it all up to be great at just one. One year H gave us the biggest shock ever, he got a woman!!!! They were a perfect match. As we all left uni, got jobs, married and had kids and drifted our separate ways it was always good to bump into H. He never seemed to change and would always greet you with that grin, a loose handshake and a comment about the footy. When he passed away I had not seen him for quite a few years but was surprised at how sad I felt. I did not really know Harold as a husband and father. I just remember him at school and I challenge anyone to who knew him then to find anything negative about him. I am quite sure no one can. That is the way I remember him. Good on you H!!!
